## Design and Build
The Solo 3 is clean and understated — a compact white unit that won't look out of place on any home exterior. IP65 rated (better weather resistance than the Ohme), it handles the UK climate without issues.
The tethered 5m cable is slightly shorter than some competitors' 7.5m cables — worth considering if your parking spot is further from the wall.
## Smart Features
The Solo 3 connects to your home Wi-Fi and is controlled via the Pod Point app. It supports:
- Scheduled charging (set the time window you want to charge)
- Real-time status monitoring
- Usage history and cost tracking
What it doesn't do: it won't talk directly to Octopus Intelligent or automatically optimise charging times based on electricity prices. You set a schedule manually.
For most people, this is fine. You set your cheap-rate window once, forget about it, and save money. If you want full automation, look at the Ohme Home Pro instead.
## The Pod Point App
The Pod Point app is functional without being exceptional. It does what you need — scheduling, monitoring, history — but it's not as polished as Ohme's or Wallbox's apps. It works reliably, which is the most important thing.
One useful feature: if you also use public Pod Point chargers (there are thousands across the UK, at Tesco, Lidl, and many car parks), the app handles those too.
## Charging Speed
The Solo 3 outputs 7.2kW — slightly less than the 7.4kW maximum some competitors offer. In practice, you won't notice the difference: it's about 1–2% slower, adding maybe 10 minutes to a full charge overnight. Not worth worrying about.
## Installation
Pod Point has a large network of approved installers across the UK. Installation is generally smooth and professional — Pod Point has been doing this for years and the process is well-optimised.
They offer an end-to-end service (charger + installation together) which simplifies things if you don't want to source them separately.
## Value for Money
At ~£699 all-in, and ~£349 after the OZEV grant, the Pod Point Solo 3 is genuinely excellent value. It's around £100 cheaper than the Ohme Home Pro before the grant.
If you're on a standard electricity tariff and just want scheduled overnight charging without complexity, the Solo 3 is hard to beat on value.
## Our Verdict
**Rating: ★★★★☆ 4.6/5**
The Pod Point Solo 3 remains one of the best home EV chargers available in the UK. It won't match the Ohme Home Pro for smart features or energy savings potential, but it's simpler, cheaper, and backed by one of the most trusted names in UK EV charging.
**Choose the Pod Point Solo 3 if:** You want a reliable, no-fuss home charger at a fair price from a reputable UK brand.
**Choose the Ohme Home Pro instead if:** You're on Octopus Intelligent or want to maximise energy savings through smart tariff integration.
